When Crisis Hits, Our Partners Show Up

Colombia, Latin America

Although not directly impacted by the retraction of U.S. humanitarian aid, Fundación Unimédicos—our Colombian partner—is witnessing its devastatingeffects.

In recent months, they have documented close to a 20% increase in the demand for sexual and reproductive healthcare for several reasons—but chief among them is that the U.S. government has forced other similar organizations to abruptly stop their work.

“The demand for our services has increased due to the reduced capacity of other organizations that have had to close or limit their reach,” said Hiefer Rodriguez Ariza, Fundación Unimédicos’ Executive Director.

The situation in Colombia is especially complex. Fundación Unimédicos—already aiding wave after wave of migrants fleeing the socioeconomic crisis in Venezuela—is being stretched even further today. A drug war between guerilla groups has driven nearly 60,000 people to flee their homes and more than 80 have already been killed.

The situation has put the lives of tens of thousands of people—particularly women and girls—at heightened risk. “At Unimédicos, every day we serve people whose lives depend on access to sexual and reproductive health services. Women and girls in situations of extreme vulnerability come to us seeking not only medical care, but also dignity, safety and hope,” said Hiefer Rodriguez Ariza. “Today, more than ever, we need the strength of our global community to continue to provide these essential services.”

Thanks to the support of donors, Fòs Feminista is standing by Fundación Unimédicos during this crisis.
