Today on Intersex Awareness Day, we join advocates calling for an end to non-consensual surgeries and for bodily autonomy. Let’s create a space for intersex people to feel safe!
Today is Intersex Awareness Day – an international day to mark the anniversary of the first public demonstration by intersex people to denounce nonconsensual surgeries. Today is also a chance for everyone in the community to learn how to be an ally to intersex people, and the barriers and injustices unfortunately still faced by the intersex community.
Intersex or Intersexuality is a term for differences in sex traits or reproductive anatomy. Intersex traits are natural variations and not disorders. Intersex traits can present in many ways, including differences in chromosomes, hormone production, and internal reproductive organs.
1 in 2,000 babies are born with differences that doctors often suggest altering with surgery, which may lead to negative consequences for the person’s physical and mental health in the future.
Children’s bodies should not be changed for them with medically unnecessary surgery. Intersex people should have the right to bodily autonomy.
