New York, NY — The Trump Administration’s order to destroy nearly $10 million in contraceptives represents a reckless escalation in its ongoing assault on global health and rights. These supplies—birth control pills, IUDs, and hormonal implants purchased by the now-defunct USAID—could safeguarded the health and lives of women and girls in low-income countries. Instead, the Administration is pushing for their incineration. At the time of writing, the stockpile remains in limbo in a warehouse in Belgium, but its future is uncertain.
In response to the Administration’s order, Giselle Carino, CEO of Fòs Feminista, issued the following statement:
“I am outraged by the Trump Administration’s ‘scorched earth’ policy on sexual and reproductive health and rights. This reckless decision to destroy essential healthcare products is not just wasteful, it is life-threatening—and it makes Fòs Feminista’s work distributing contraceptive supplies more urgent than ever.
Fòs Feminista stands unwavering in its commitment to ensure real and equitable access to contraceptive methods for women and girls worldwide. Every day, alongside our partner organizations, we work to strengthen the systems and policies that make contraceptive access a reality, especially for those who face the greatest obstacles. Now, more than ever, this commitment is essential to safeguarding human rights and reproductive autonomy for all.
But our work does not end there. Recent cuts by the U.S. government and other international donors have crippled underfunded public health systems across Latin America and Africa. As global funding declines, local leadership is rising. Our local partners are at the forefront of protecting rights, including by advocating with their own governments to increase public budgets for reproductive health programs. This ensures continued access to care and reduces reliance on foreign aid.”
