Fòs Feminista applauds the nomination of a renowned expert on women’s economic empowerment, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Below please find a statement from Serra Sippel, Chief Global Advocacy Officer at Fòs Feminista, applauding President Biden’s nomination of Dr. Geeta Rao Gupta for Ambassador at Large for Global Women’s Issues at the Department of State. Fòs Feminista is an international alliance of more than 135 organizations worldwide advancing sexual and reproductive health, rights (SRHR) and justice for women, girls and gender-diverse people.
“Fòs Feminista applauds President Biden’s decision to nominate Dr. Gupta as Ambassador at Large for Global Women’s Issues. Dr. Gupta is a renowned expert on global women’s issues including women’s economic empowerment, gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights. In her previous positions at the U.N. Foundation, World Bank, UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, she demonstrated her adept understanding and commitment to intersectionality, addressing structural barriers that women face that put them at risk of HIV and other health challenges. COVID-19 exposed and deepened existing inequalities, especially for the most marginalized women, girls, and gender diverse people. It is important that the next Ambassador at Large for Women’s Issues understands how women’s economic empowerment, gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights are interconnected and must be addressed together in order to achieve equity and equality for women, girls and gender diverse people.
