Ensuring access to a variety of modern contraceptive methods is the key to reducing unintended pregnancies that can lead to unsafe abortions under restrictive settings. By supporting women avoid unintended pregnancies through modern contraception, fewer are put in situations where they might face unsafe abortions. When women do need an abortion, having access to safe, high-quality care means they can avoid unsafe procedures that put their health and lives at risk.
Without access to safe and legal abortion, there is no reproductive autonomy for women and girls. And without reproductive autonomy, we cannot participate as full citizens in society. What began in Uruguay is now saving lives across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Fòs Feminista has worked for more than ten years to expand a proven model to reduce the risks of abortion in contexts where abortion remains inaccessible.
Fòs Feminista partner GIWYN runs the Ms. Rosy Hotline, reaching 100,000 people each year with trusted information on contraception, abortion pills, self-managed care, and post-abortion support.
In Colombia, where abortion is legal, Fòs Feminista partners provide women with information, counseling, and medications so they can safely manage abortion in their own homes.
Working with the regional Association of Professional Midwives, we are engaging and training midwives in several countries across Latin America to provide counseling, medications, and support for self-managed abortion.
