Lusungu is an unapologetic Malawian feminist, activist, and gender specialist who is passionate about advancing girls’ and women’s rights. She has been a Fòs Feminista Board Director since 2021, serving as Board Secretary since 2022. She co-chairs the Board’s Resource Mobilization Committee and is also a member of the Audit & Risk Intelligence Committee.
Lusungu has 11 years of experience in the NGO sector, particularly in programming and advocacy around girls’ education, women’s rights, school-related gender-based violence, and violence against women and girls (VAWG). She has received various awards and recognition for her work, including her selection as an Obama Foundation leader in Africa (2019) and as a Mandela Washington Fellow (2016).
Lusungu is the Co-Founder of Growing Ambitions, an organization focused on creating safe spaces for girls and young women to thrive through mentorship and peer learning. She is the Co-Founder of Feministing While African, an online community of over 260 African feminists, and she co-founded the Malawi Feminists and Allies, a collective of Malawian feminists and organizations that advocates for women’s rights and social justice. In addition, Lusungu serves as a board member for the Theatre for a Change (since 2020), Tongole Foundation (since 2014), and World Education Inc (since 2018).
Currently, she works as an Associate – Capacity Development at The Prevention Collaborative. In this role, she provides support to practitioners of VAWG prevention programs across the globe, including some UN country offices, through synthesizing global evidence, developing online courses, and facilitating and providing advisory services. Before joining The Prevention Collaborative, Lusungu worked with grassroots and international organizations, including ActionAid International, World Education Inc/Bantwana, and Jesuit Refugee Service, to design and lead implementation of girls’ education programs and programs to address school-related gender-based violence and violence against women. She also has experience in capacity strengthening for small organizations and adapting gender-transformative approaches to prevent violence against women for different contexts.
Lusungu holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, and demography, and a master’s degree in development studies.
