We strongly oppose the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which is a brutal attack on the people of Uganda and contributes to a global setback for human rights, gender equality, and public health in Uganda.\n\nThe Anti-Homosexuality Bill instills fear, insecurity, and violence. LGBTQI people across Uganda have already suffered direct and indirect attacks because of passage of the legislation. This includes blackmail, social exclusion, fear of attending health clinics, and violence.\n\nCriminalization of individuals based on their identity is not only a violation of human rights, but also an affront to public health. Countries across Africa that criminalize LGBTQI people have a\u00a0une pr\u00e9valence plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e du VIH<\/a>\u00a0par rapport aux pays qui ne criminalisent pas les personnes en raison de leur identit\u00e9 sexuelle et de genre. Les lois et politiques discriminatoires telles que le projet de loi contre l'homosexualit\u00e9 freinent les progr\u00e8s en mati\u00e8re de sant\u00e9 publique, notamment en ce qui concerne le VIH et le sida, mettent fin \u00e0 des vies et, en fin de compte, ne permettent pas d'atteindre les objectifs fix\u00e9s par la loi.\u00a0nuire \u00e0 l'ensemble de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9<\/a>.\n\nAs Global South-led organizations, we do not want to see you codify attacks on LGBTQI people brought to our communities through colonization. Around the world, countries are repealing archaic colonial policies that inspire violence against LGBTQI people.\u00a0Angola<\/a>, \u00a0Botswana<\/a>,\u00a0\u00celes Cook<\/a>,Le Royaume-Uni, le Gabon, le Lesotho, S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 et Pr\u00edncipe, les Seychelles et Singapour ont tous r\u00e9cemment abrog\u00e9 des mesures datant de l'\u00e9poque coloniale qui attaquaient les personnes LGBTQI dans le cadre d'actes de souverainet\u00e9 nationale. En outre, certains pays comme la Bolivie, les Fidji et les\u00a0Afrique du Sud<\/a>\u00a0have taken further steps with their respective constitutions by prohibiting unfair discrimination on the grounds of gender identity and sexual orientation. Under your leadership, Uganda has the potential to emulate these rights too.\n\nThe Anti-Homosexuality Bill curtails Uganda\u2019s democratic efforts by inhibiting civil society organizations from equally and meaningfully participating in civic and political spaces. The shrinking of civil society and scapegoating of intentionally marginalized communities like LGBTQI people is not only a symptom of backsliding democracies and authoritarian governments but a core component of it.
